Top 10 Resume Blunders

  1. Spelling, typo, and grammatical errors – Spell check, spell check, spell check!!!
  2. Missing personal contact information, inaccurate, or unprofessional email addresses
  3. Generic objectives and/or meaningless introductions – No to generic statements – yes only if it’s very specific and directed at a particular position
  4. Missing employer information, and/or not identifying what industry worked in – Always include name of company, city, state, job title, and in first bullet point include type of industry
  5. Too much information – This is not the place to include a list of references, or company contact information
  6. Personal information – Stick to professional experiences.  Yes to organization involvement and volunteer work – No to hobbies and other personal interests
  7. Written in 1st or 3rd person
  8. Unexplained gaps in employment
  9. Too long and narrative – long dense paragraphs, and over 2 pages – use bullet points to highlight the top 5-7 areas of responsibility for each position
  10. Use of misleading information, and/or lying – especially in terms of education, inflated titles, and dates
