Preparing for the Interview

Well, you’ve just received a call that XYZ Company would like to talk with you about the position you’ve applied for.  You’ve done your homework to this point; don’t let your guard down now. Interviews can be very intimidating, however you can take some positive steps, and go in prepared for anything. The following checklist provides you with some ideas to think about, and with a little time and effort, should assist you in getting an edge in the interview!

  • Make a list of what the employer is looking for based on the job description
  • Compare the above information with the qualities you possess that fit those requirements
  • Research the company and the industry
  • Prepare at least five success stories to have at your fingertips
  • Create a list of questions to ask the interviewer about the job, the company, and the industry
  • Know your salary information – research when necessary. Determine your salary needs and know your bottom line
  • Make sure that your reference information is up to date and that you have obtained permission from all of them to use their name
  • Be prepared to talk about yourself (including your strengths and weaknesses), have a clear understanding of your goals and objectives and expect some of these more common questions:
  1. Why did you leave or are you leaving your last position?
  2. Why do you want to work for this company?
  3. What has been your most significant achievement?
  4. How would your last boss and colleagues describe you?
  5. Why should we hire you?
